About

What are spiders?
Spiders make up the largest group of arachnids, and in North America alone, there are more than 3,000 species of spiders. As arachnids, spiders have eight legs and two body segments, but unlike most insects, they lack both wings and antennae. They are predators and feed on nuisance insects, flies, moths, and other spiders; they do not feed on plants. Spiders very eco-important as they help to control insect populations.

Are spiders dangerous?

Spiders are shy and reclusive by nature, so contact with a spider usually only occurs accidentally. Most species of spiders living in our area are nuisance spiders and pose no real harm to Houston residents; in fact, they help to limit the number of insects living in our yards. However, this is not to say that all spiders are harmless. In the United States, some species are dangerous because their venom is strong enough to trigger an allergic reaction.

Why do I have a spider problem?

Spiders become a problem on the properties offering them ample food sources (insects) and plenty of secluded areas to hide. Whatever is in your yard or home that is attracting insects will also attract spiders to your property. Spiders feed on insects and insects forage for food in places like gardens, outdoor eating areas, trash, and compost. Many insects are attracted to outdoor lights; this is also an area where spiders gather, hoping for an easy meal!

Where will I find spiders?

When spiders are living outside, they build their webs or burrows in a variety of places, preferring locations that are dark and secluded to keep them out of the view of people and predators. Tall grasses, gardens, bushes, shrubs, and trees make excellent places for web-building spiders to build their webs; those spiders that burrow do so under woodpiles, fallen trees, bushes, and rocks. Spiders also like to hide behind wood shingles, shutters, under decks, and behind tree bark. Spiders will move into homes and other buildings when seeking a safe place to lay their eggs or to feed on those insects that have also made their way inside.
