About

What are termites?
Termites cause more than five billion dollars worth of damage across the country each year. These are wood-eating pests that no one wants on their property or in their home. Termites are social insects, living and working together in large groups. Termite colonies divide themselves into different groups, or “castes”: workers, soldiers, and reproductives (males and queens). In the Houston area, two species of termites invade our properties: subterranean termites and drywood termites.

Are termites dangerous?

Termites are dangerous pests because of the large amount of structural damage they cause inside of any home or other structure they invade. The good news is that while they do cause structural damage, they pose no threat to people. In fact, we rarely ever see termites, even though they are active year-round.

Worker termites work around the clock to gather food to feed their colonies. Their ability to operate undetected, moving through wooden structures, mud tubes, and the soil, make termites a problematic pest. More times than not, the damage they do happens before you know they are present. It is also important to be aware of the fact that most homeowners’ insurance does not cover termite damage.

Why do I have a termite problem?

Houston is known for its hot, humid weather, which unfortunately happens to be the weather conditions in which termites thrive. Subterranean termites usually move inside through tiny cracks and crevices in the foundation or through wood that is making direct contact with the soil, becoming a problem in homes after finding their way inside while foraging for food. On the other hand, drywood termites usually get into our homes in pieces of previously infested wood or wooden furniture.

Where will I find termites?

Subterranean termites travel back and forth from their nest to a food source each day. These termites invade and feed on structural wood, preferring wood damaged by water. They feed on the wood behind walls and under floors. Eventually, termites move above ground level and feed on the wood above the ceiling. Drywood termites live, feed, and nest inside of the wooden structures they are feeding on. They feed on dry, sound wood, undamaged by water.

  • Do not let wooden structures on your home or property make direct contact with soil.
  • Leave a crushed rock barrier that is at least 12-18 inches between soil or mulch and your home’s foundation.
  • Remove fallen trees, tree stumps, and other wooden debris from your yard.
  • Replace mulch with a non-organic option like rubber mulch or crushed stone.
  • Seal cracks in the foundation.
  • Clean out your gutters and place weatherstripping around windows and doors to prevent water from backing up and seeping into your walls.
  • Fix leaky pipes, faucets, or fixtures.
  • Keep humidity levels in your home low by using dehumidifiers.
  • If wooden beams or other structures in your home become damaged by water, immediately replace them.
  • Inspect wooden furniture, wood beams, and other wooden items for termites before bringing them into your home.
