About

What are wasps?

Wasps are stinging insects and formidable pests that can use their smooth stingers to deliver multiple, painful stings when threatened. Most species of wasps have a pinched waist, two pairs of wings, and six legs that hang down when they fly. The majority of wasps are predatory and hunt species of garden pests, spiders, and other insects to feed their developing larvae. Their predatory nature helps to control populations of nuisance insects. Adult wasps feed on pollen and nectar and are responsible for some pollination.

Are wasps dangerous?

Wasps that live outside, away from people, are not dangerous pests; they are a welcome and much-needed part of the ecosystem. However, when wasps decide to nest close to where we live or work, they become unwelcome intruders. The closer a wasp colony places their nest to your home or a high traffic area of your yard, the more likely it is that you, your kids, or pets will be stung. Wasps, like many other stinging insects, become hostile if they feel threatened.

Why do I have a wasp problem?

Wasps become a problem in our yards because it offers them a lot of sheltered areas to build their nests. Some of their favorite nesting locations include the areas under eaves, soffits, gutters, tree branches, and utility poles. Another thing that attracts wasps to our properties is new food sources found in open garbage cans, outdoor eating areas, and flowering plants and trees.

Where will I find wasps?

Wasps are either social or solitary. Most social species of wasps place their nests up off the ground. Those species that are solitary build their nests in the ground, either digging a burrow themselves or using the abandoned nest of another small animal.

Wasps are most active in the late summer and fall when their colony is at its largest size, and workers are out in large numbers foraging for food. Workers fly around our yards, gardens, trees, and other vegetation searching for food to feed themselves and colony. While they are mainly outdoor pests, wasps sometimes move inside homes through chimneys, holes along the roofline, and other openings. When they get inside, they usually place their nests in attics or behind wall voids.
